theCOURT
Soldier-straight trees
Glistened sloe-black
Snow-sentries stark
On guard for attack.
As midwestern’s west
Came for the clash
To midwestern’s east
On court would west dash?
The cassock made all
Kneel and be humbled.
The game whistle blew
And they fouled and they fumbled.
They dribbled and traveled
Bore skin-burns from falls
Made free-throws and slam-dunks
And bad judgment calls.
Though LaSalette lions
A new Notre Dame
Heard roars from the crowd
They kept their pride tame.
For outside the court
The iced trees sloe-black
Lined the walk from the Church
To our Lady’s white back.
Where helplessly once
Watched sons of her Son
Each take a stab
In her white back and run.
So the new lions know
The yoke they must carry
While relishing in
Their win o’er St. Mary
Is the yolk upon both
And good-willed on courts
To obtain the gold medal
In the spiritual sports
Where walks lined by trees
From the Church iced sloe-black
Hear sons of her Son cheer…
“Tradition is back!”
