Sons...

BROTHER’S
KEEPER

I remember
Little boys
Running all day
Long in noise.

Kicking balls
To the others
Sometimes kicking
Their own brothers.

Then a fist fight
On the ground
In the leaves
Roll round and round.

I would grab
Each one by ear
“You don’t stop?
There’s much to fear!”

Put them in their
Bedroom, hot
Forced to sit
And talk a lot

To learn they were
Their “brother’s keeper”
Crucifixed walls
Drew them in deeper

Into the mystery
Of the cross
The sign of life
A sign of loss.

Would they be
Just passers-by
Or like the “good thief”
In Him, die.

I remember
Little boys
Running all day
Long in noise

And as the slope
Of sin grows steeper –
Be Christ’s “good thief”
And “brother’s keeper”.
